People just assume I’m Tunisian – the Irishman at Club World Cup

At the Club World Cup in Qatar, Irishman Liam O’Connor found himself constantly mistaken for a Tunisian local. Despite his fair skin and red hair, O’Connor’s proficiency in Arabic and deep knowledge of Tunisian culture led many to assume he was from the North African country.

“It’s been a running joke among my friends,” O’Connor said. “They can’t believe how easily I blend in here.”

As a long-time fan of Tunisian football, O’Connor was thrilled to attend the tournament and cheer on his favorite team. He even donned a traditional Tunisian robe and headdress to show his support.

“The reception I’ve received from Tunisian fans has been incredible,” O’Connor remarked. “They’ve welcomed me with open arms and treated me like one of their own.”

Despite the initial confusion, O’Connor has embraced his newfound Tunisian identity and enjoyed immersing himself in the local culture. He has even picked up some Tunisian phrases and customs along the way.

“It’s been a truly unique experience,” O’Connor said. “I never expected to feel so at home in a place so different from my own.”

As the Club World Cup draws to a close, O’Connor plans to continue supporting Tunisian football and fostering his newfound connection to the country.

“I may be Irish by birth, but in spirit, I feel like a honorary Tunisian now,” O’Connor concluded with a smile.
